Men's Tennis Battles with Luther despite 9-0 Loss

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Apr. 19, 2024) - The Buena Vista University men's tennis team began its final homestand of the season on Friday evening as it hosted Luther College, but despite battling with the Norse throughout most of the match, the Beavers did come up short, 9-0.

All three doubles matches were tough battles by both sides with No. 1 and No. 2 each sitting at 5-4 before Luther pulled away late in each one to win 8-6 and 8-5, respectively. The Norse also claimed No. 3 by an 8-4 margin.

Luther was too much to handle during singles play as the Norse captured all six matches in straight sets, allowing more than two points in only two separate sets.

“Luther is a team you have to play perfect against to make a dent in the scores, and while we played well at times, I feel like we left some points and ultimately some games out on the court tonight,” says BVU head coach Brett Groen. “They are a phenomenal team and that doesn’t take long to see, but we really did battle our best during doubles tonight, and I think the let down of not getting a win there, carried over into singles.”

The Norse improved to 20-5 overall and 7-0 in conference matches while capturing the A-R-C regular season title with the win.

Buena Vista is now 4-11 overall (1-3 A-R-C) and will play its home finale tomorrow by hosting Coe College at 12 p.m.
