AUBURNDALE, Fla. (Mar. 8, 2024) - Senior Brayden Polzien got the start and pitched a career-high five innings, fifth-year Calvin Harris tallied four hits and four RBI, and the Buena Vista baseball team rolled to a commanding 10-3 victory over Fontbonne (5-9) on Friday morning.
Harris, along with Joel Garcia, singled home runs in the top of the first to give the Beavers the 2-0 advantage. Neither team scored again until the fifth when BVU tacked on five more runs in the top half for a 7-0 cushion. Harris was again right in the middle of the barrage with a two-run single to right center.
The Griffins got on the board in the bottom half of the fifth with a two-out RBI single that started a string of three straight innings in which they would score one run.
BVU was just too much offensively for Fontbonne by adding two more insurance runs in the seventh and one more in the ninth. Harris drove in two of those three runs down the stretch with a pair of RBI doubles. He finished the contest 4-for-5 at the dish with the two doubles, season-high five RBI and one run scored.
Garcia finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored while fifth-year Zack Beekmann was also 3-for-5 with and matched a career-high with three runs scored. Junior Evan Taylor was 2-for-5 with a double, RBI and one run scored. Fifth-year Jordan Mathewson went 1-for-4 to give him 199 career hits. He's on the verge of becoming the fourth player in program history to reach 200 career base knocks.
Overall, the two teams combined for 26 hits in the contest and stranded 21 runners.
