Baseball with 10-3 Win over Fontbonne

AUBURNDALE, Fla. (Mar. 8, 2024) - Senior Brayden Polzien got the start and pitched a career-high five innings, fifth-year Calvin Harris tallied four hits and four RBI, and the Buena Vista baseball team rolled to a commanding 10-3 victory over Fontbonne (5-9) on Friday morning.

Harris, along with Joel Garcia, singled home runs in the top of the first to give the Beavers the 2-0 advantage. Neither team scored again until the fifth when BVU tacked on five more runs in the top half for a 7-0 cushion. Harris was again right in the middle of the barrage with a two-run single to right center.

The Griffins got on the board in the bottom half of the fifth with a two-out RBI single that started a string of three straight innings in which they would score one run.

BVU was just too much offensively for Fontbonne by adding two more insurance runs in the seventh and one more in the ninth. Harris drove in two of those three runs down the stretch with a pair of RBI doubles. He finished the contest 4-for-5 at the dish with the two doubles, season-high five RBI and one run scored.

Garcia finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored while fifth-year Zack Beekmann was also 3-for-5 with and matched a career-high with three runs scored. Junior Evan Taylor was 2-for-5 with a double, RBI and one run scored. Fifth-year Jordan Mathewson went 1-for-4 to give him 199 career hits. He's on the verge of becoming the fourth player in program history to reach 200 career base knocks.

Overall, the two teams combined for 26 hits in the contest and stranded 21 runners.

Brayden Polzien on the mound.

Polzien picked up his first win of the year after allowing only one run and scattering six hits while striking out a career-high seven batters. His previous best was five strikeouts set as a freshman.

Christian Kaanapu came on in relief to start the sixth and surrendered a pair of runs over his two innings of work before freshman Jake Eddie came on to close the door in the final two frames. The right-hander allowed a pair of base hits, walked one and struck out one.

Buena Vista is now 8-3 on the year and wraps up the spring trip on Saturday morning with a 9:15 a.m. (EST) first pitch against UW-Oshkosh. The Titans (4-2) were among the list of teams receiving votes in this week's d3baseball.com national poll.
