Coe Hangs on for 73-61 Victory over Women's Basketball

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Dec. 7, 2024) - The Buena Vista University women's basketball team trimmed an 18-point second half deficit down to seven inside the final five minutes, but Coe College closed the game on an 11-6 run to hold off the Beavers 73-61 on Saturday evening inside of Siebens Fieldhouse.

The Kohawks led 16-10 after the first quarter and extended the margin to 40-26 at the half. BVU was held under 30 percent shooting in the first quarter but heated up from there. Despite Coe making back-to-back three-pointers to begin the second half and build its 18-point cushion just minutes into the third, the Beavers made 6-of-13 field goal attempts for the second straight quarter and pulled back within 51-41 heading to the fourth.

Buena Vista made eight field goals and shot over 53 percent from the field in the final stanza, but Coe never allowed them to go on a big run by making 10 field goals of its own. Junior Danika Demers gave the Beavers life down the stretch by knocking down a three-point bucket to make it a seven-point game at 62-55 with 4:10 remaining. Taylor Brunson, who scored a game-high 37 points for the Kohawks, scored four straight points to make it 66-55, and Coe led by double digits the final 3:00.

Madalynn Hilgendorf, BVU women's basketball vs. Coe

Freshman Bradi Krager scored in double digits for the sixth time this season by turning in a team-high 19 points. She made a career-high four three-point shots (4-of-7) and finished 6-of-11 from the field overall. Junior Madalyn Hilgendorf added 11 points with Demers adding seven. Freshman Tyme Boettcher chipped in with six points and grabbed a team-leading five rebounds.

BVU shot over 50 percent from long range in the second half and finished the game 8-for-22 from beyond the arc and 43 percent from the field overall. The Kohawks struggled from long distance at 6-of-27 but still managed to score 38 points in the paint and finished a touch better than the Beavers at 43.9 percent.

A big factor in the game was on the glass where Coe (8-1, 3-0 A-R-C) held a 42-26 advantage, including a 16-5 margin on the offensive end. Brunson grabbed a team-high nine with seven of those as offensive boards.

Buena Vista is 4-5 on the year (0-2 A-R-C) and travels to North Central University (Minn.) on Saturday, Dec. 14, for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
