Beavers Fall to Loras to Begin 2024

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Jan. 3, 2024) - The Buena Vista women's basketball team hosted Loras College in the first game of 2024, but the hot-shooting Duhawks came into Siebens Fieldhouse and handed the Beavers a tough 97-46 home loss on Wednesday evening.

The Duhawks came out firing, shooting 60 percent from the field, including 4-of-7 from long range, in the opening quarter and built a 27-11 advantage. Loras continued the hot shooting from downtown, draining seven more in the second quarter, and despite shooting 5-of-10 from the field in the stanza, the Beavers saw their deficit increase to 58-25 at the break.

BVU was 0-of-8 from distance in the second half and shot 32 percent from the field en route to its 10th straight loss to the Duhawks.

Sophomore Abby Nagel led the Beavers with 11 points. CJ Long came off the bench and added eight points, while sophomore Danika Demers chipped in with seven points, six rebounds and four assists.

Buena Vista finished the game shooting 34.6 percent from the field and just 2-of-17 from beyond the arc. The Beavers did make 8-of-10 shots at the charity stripe, including 3-of-4 from freshman Allie Leisher.

Madison Haslow made 8-of-11 shots from long range and finished with a game-high 24 points to lead the Duhawks (11-2, 3-1 A-R-C). Silvana Scarsella followed with 20 points on 4-of-5 from downtown, as the Duhawks went 16-of-33 from downtown and made 52.2 percent from the field overall.

Buena Vista is now 1-10 overall (0-4 A-R-C) and returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 6, at the University of Dubuque starting at 2 p.m.
