Beavers Handed 83-69 Home Loss to Coe

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Jan. 20, 2024) - Sophomore Danika Demers scored 16 points and dished out eight assists while junior McKenna Cone and sophomore Sidney Reimer each scored 10 points, but the Buena Vista women's basketball team came up short on Saturday against visiting Coe College, 83-69.

BVU shot a season-high 49.2 percent from the field, including 7-of-20 from downtown but the Kohawks were slightly better at 52 percent overall and 9-of-23 from downtown. The Kohawks used the free-throw line to its advantage making 10-of-13 while BVU was held to only 4-of-5.

The game was tied at 11-11 midway through the first quarter before the Kohawks forced BVU into three straight turnovers to score eight straight points over a 45-second span to go in front 19-11 en route to a 26-16 lead at the break.

BVU continued to stick around as back-to-back layups from Jenna Hallock brought the team within 29-22 and the team was still within that same margin midway through before Coe used a 12-2 spurt to end the half and take a 44-27 halftime lead.

A layup from CJ Long brought the Beavers as close as 10 late in the third quarter and the team was able to remain within striking distance heading to the final period after a Cone basket just before the buzzer made it 59-48.

It was back-and-forth to begin the fourth quarter, but the Beavers weren't able to pick up enough stops, defensively, as the Kohawks gradually pushed the advantage up to as many as 23 with 3:26 remaining. The Beavers went on a little run to close out the game, as junior Trisha Westphal made a free-throw and then added her first career three-pointer at the buzzer for the game's final margin.

Coe held a 31-19 advantage in points off turnovers in the contest and an 11-4 edge in second chance points.

CJ Long led BVU off the bench with eight points on 4-of-5 shooting with senior Addison Weber grabbing a team-high seven rebounds.

Buena Vista is now 2-14 overall (1-7 A-R-C) and is set to step out of conference play to host Mount Mary University at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 24.
