STORM LAKE, Iowa (Sept. 17, 2023) -
Matthew Turpen rolled in a two-under round of 70 on Sunday afternoon and finished fourth overall to help lead the Buena Vista men's golf team up the standings and into a third-place finish after a round of 293.
Turpen's round is the first round of 70 for the program since Anthony Gallagher went that low back in 2020-21 during the first round of the Morningside Invite.
Cooper Sebastian nearly matched Turpen but had to settle for a one-under round of 71. He was 11 shots better than an opening round 82 on Saturday and moved up to finish in 25th.
Owen Collison and
Kaden Miller carded rounds of 77 and 78, respectively, while
Payton Greenwood also went low with a career-best round of 75 after an 82 on Saturday.
BVU's round of 293 was the second-lowest among any of the 12 teams on the day and marks the lowest for the program over at least the last 16 years. The last time it went this low was a 294 at Iowa Lakes Invite back in 2009-10.
The 'B' team tied for eighth overall with Simpson College after it's final round 317.
Kaleb Sander led the way for that group with a 12th place finish (74-76; 150).
Brayden Irish also tallied a pair of rounds in the 70's, including a 79 to close things out.
Mason Laven dipped to an 81 and took 39th.
Justin Hanks and Quin Van Roekel rounded out that line-up.
A total of 68 golfers made up the field which was won by Iowa Central's Colby Ramsdale after he carded a four-under round of 68. He held off teammate Nico Booyens by two shots. The Tritons also captured the team crown after rounds of 299 and 292. They held off Nebraska Wesleyan by four shots as the Prairie Wolves (298 and 297) were the only other team with a pair of sub-300 scores.
Buena Vista will next compete at the Wartburg College Fall Invite next weekend (Sept. 22 and 23).
