Women's Basketball Falls 69-50 at St. Catherine's to Close out 2023

ST. PAUL, Minn. (Dec. 30, 2023) - Buena Vista junior McKenna Cone and sophomore Danika Demers each turned in career-highs with four made three-point baskets and scored 16 points apiece, but the Buena Vista women's basketball team came up short in its final outing of 2023 with a 69-50 non-conference road loss at St. Catherine University on Saturday afternoon.

Cone and Demers went a combined 8-of-11 from downtown in the contest and made 11 of the team's 19 field goals overall. Demers also chipped in with a team-high seven rebounds and four assists while leading the way with 33 minutes played. Jenna Hallock added six points as Allie Leisher scored five points and grabbed five rebounds off the bench. Annie Johnson also came off the bench and hauled in a career-high six rebounds.

As a team, the Beavers went 9-of-22 from beyond the arc in the game, including 5-of-11 in the second half, which accounted for half of the team's made field goals during that stretch. The team struggled from the free-throw line, making just 3-of-10 attempts.

St. Catherine's jumped out to a 7-1 lead early on, but the Beavers hung close with SCU leading 19-11 after the first quarter. The lead reached double digits for the Wildcats in the opening minute of the second quarter, but a three-point shot from Cone kept BVU within 31-19 midway through. From there, the Wildcats closed the half on a 13-2 run and led 44-21 at the break.

Despite the Wildcats building their largest lead of 58-28 with 1:31 left in the third quarter, the Beavers put together a strong push in the final quarter by outscoring SCU, 18-9, over the final stanza while holding the home team to just 4-of-19 from the field.

St. Catherine's out-rebounded BVU 51-33 in the contest which led to 20 second chance points for the Wildcats, as they finished with nine more made field goals than the Beavers. Greta Schimnowski led all scorers with 21 points to lead SCU, including a 5-of-7 effort from downtown.

Buena Vista is now 1-9 overall and jumps back into American Rivers Conference play on Wednesday, Jan. 3, by hosting Loras College at 5:30 p.m.
