LINCOLN, Neb. (Jan. 11, 2023) - The Buena Vista wrestling team notched bonus points in three matches on Wednesday night, and that helped the team pick up a big 29-22 road victory over Nebraska Wesleyan inside Snyder Arena.
BVU jumped out to a 14-0 lead after back-to-back major decisions by
Brandon Foster (125) and
Tyler Japp (133) and a late first period fall by
Nolan Nguyen (141). The Prairie Wolves cut into the lead with a win by forfeit at 149 pounds before pulling within 12-10 after a major decision at 157. Junior
Max Mashek (165) extended the Beaver lead back to 18-10 with a big fall early in the second period and
Garret Bruce added to the lead with a thrilling 2-0 decision with a reversal in the third period at 184 pounds.
Luis Salazar would secure the team's first league victory of the season with his pin in the closing seconds of the first period a 197 pounds.
NWU closed out the dual with a pin at 285 pounds which was it's second of the night.
Buena Vista improves to 3-8 (1-2 A-R-C) and is right back in action on Saturday, Jan. 14, at the Cliff Keen-Mike Duroe Invite, hosted by Cornell College. The action in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, is set to begin at 9 a.m.
