INDIANOLA, Iowa (April 9, 2022) - The Buena Vista baseball team, which is second in the American Rivers Conference in runs scored this season, chalked up 24 more on Saturday afternoon as the Beavers wrapped up the three-game series sweep at Simpson College with 10-9 and 14-4 (7-inning) victories.
After both team scored a pair of runs in the first inning of game one, Simpson then pushed across two more in the second and led 4-2. BVU then took control with run in the fourth and a big six-run fifth inning to go in front at 9-4. The Storm didn't go away, however rallying back with five runs in the sixth inning to pull even at 9-9. The Beavers went back in front an inning later when
Evan Taylor doubled home a run to make it 10-9. Simpson continued to put the pressure on, getting the game-tying run on in both the seventh and eighth before also putting the winning run on base in the ninth before
Calvin Harris got a double play to end the game.
Evan Taylor had a team-leading three hits, including a double and three RBI for BVU, while
Drew Taylor also doubled and drove home two.
Jordan Mathewson blasted a home run to right center to lead off the game as BVU had five extra-base hits in the contest.
Dalton Glenn made the start on the mound and was touched for eight runs and 13 hits over 5.1 innings despite walking one and striking out nine.
Spencer Holmes pitched one-third of an inning before giving way to
Michael Demers, who worked 1.2 innings, allowing one hit and striking out two while picking up his first win of the year. Harris pitched the final 1.2 innings and chalked up his fourth save.
It was all Beavers in the finale as they jumped out with eight runs in the top of the first before adding five more in the seventh. BVU had just eight hits and only two for extra-bases, but were able to take advantage of four Simpson errors and 10 walks.
Harris doubled and finished with two hits while
Evan Taylor chipped in with two more.
Joel Garcia doubled and drove in three,
Jordan Mathewson went 1-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored.
Mark Eddie (2-2) pitched six strong innings to pick up the win. He allowed four runs while scattering seven hits, struck out nine and walked one.
Buena Vista improves to 15-8 on the year (7-2 A-R-C). The team looks to keep momentum going as it plays a nine-inning midweek game on Tuesday, April 12, at Nebraska Wesleyan (10-13, 3-5 A-R-C) starting at 3:00 p.m. The team then hosts Wartburg College (17-10, 7-3 A-R-C) for a three-game weekend series beginning on Friday, April 15 at 6:00 p.m.
