Baseball Rallies with 5-run Seventh to Win Series Opener over Storm

INDIANOLA, Iowa (April 8, 2022) - Despite falling behind 5-1 early on, the Buena Vista baseball team used a big five-run seventh inning and overcame four errors, defensively, to rally against Simpson College and take the opener of a three-game series over the Storm by the final of 6-5 on Friday night.

Simpson (11-10, 2-5 A-R-C) scored a pair of runs in the first and added three more in the fourth to build a 5-1 advantage.  BVU's only run until the seventh came on a Zack Beekmann RBI single in the third that made it 2-1.

The Beavers loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh and got the rally started by scoring the first run on a balk.  Joel Garcia then followed with an RBI single through the right side to cut the deficit down to two before Caden Mathewson tied things up at 5-5 with a two-run triple down the right field line.  Calvin Harris kept the rally going and capped the scoring with an RBI single that scored Mathewson.

Brayden Polzein, who was the third pitcher used by Buena Vista in the contest, struck out the side in the eighth before Calvin Harris came on and worked around a one-out walk in the ninth by striking out two of the four batters he faced to record his third save of the season.

Mason Gehling came on to relieve starter Morgan Smith to begin the bottom of the fifth and pitched two scoreless innings, allowing no hits and striking out five to earn the win and move to 3-2 on the year.

Eight of the nine starters recorded at least one hit for the Beavers, who held a 10-6 advantage overall. All six of the Storm hits were singles. Caden Mathewson and Logan Mueller each had two of BVU's base knocks with Mueller also scoring twice.

Buena Vista improves to 13-8 on the year and 5-2 in conference play.  The same two teams will take the diamond on Saturday to wrap up the series with a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
