STORM LAKE, Iowa (April 2, 2022) - The Buena Vista baseball team picked up a 7-4 victory in game one of Saturday's doubleheader against No. 16 Loras before dropping a hard fought 14-9 game in the nightcap as the Duhawks took 2-of-3 in the series.
Fresh off his perfect game performance from a week ago, junior
Dalton Glenn (2-1) got the start in the opener and pitched seven strong innings, allowing just three runs and five hits while striking out four and walking none.Â
Calvin Harris came on in relief to pitch the final 1.2 innings and struck out four the six batters he faced.Â
The Duhawks got on the board in the second when Dylan Pardoe lifted a ball into right center field that was lost in the sun and went for a 1-out triple for the team's first base runner. He then scored on a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.Â
Kyler Corcoran and
Evan Taylor gave BVU its first lead of the series at 2-1 in the third with RBI singles.
Daniel Rogers connected for a 2-run homerun to right in the fourth for the Duhawks that put them back in front 3-2.Â
Caden Mathewson tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom half with an RBI double before
Grant Oseka launched a towering 2-run home run later in the frame out into the wind in left that gave the Beavers the lead for good at 5-3.
Loras did tighten things up at 5-4 with an RBI single in the seventh before
Drew Taylor gave BVU some breathing room at 7-4 in the eighth with a big two-run homer to dead center for his first blast of the year. He also doubled earlier in the game and was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Oseka was also 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored. Eight of the team's 12 hits in the contest went for extra-bases.
The Duhakws opened up a 9-1 lead in the fourth inning of game two before the Beavers used a big five-run spot in the bottom half to begin a valiant comeback bid.Â
Caden Mathewson and
Drew Taylor each had two-run singles in the frame to make it 9-6. Oseka later stole home to get the team within 9-7. Loras went back up 10-7 after a costly throwing error which would have ended the inning in the sixth. BVU pushed across two more runs in the home half to get as close as 10-9 before the Duhawks went to their closer, Ethan Peters, who worked the final 3.2 innings to pick up his league-leading seventh save of the year. The Duhawks gave him some insurance late by scoring a run in the seventh and three more in the eighth.
Joel Garcia led BVU with three hits with
Caden Mathewson and Oseka adding two each. Â
Mark Eddie (1-2) got the start and suffered the loss. He allowed seven runs and seven hits over 2.0 innings.
Buena Vista is now 12-8 overall (4-2 A-R-C) and will go back on the road for a three-game weekend series on April 8 and 9 at Simpson College (10-9, 1-4 A-R-C).
