Beaver Baseball Wins Series over Wartburg with DH on Saturday

STORM LAKE, Iowa (April 16, 2022) - The Buena Vista baseball team bounced back from its series opening loss against Wartburg in a big way on Saturday afternoon by picking up its third straight series victory with a doubleheader sweep over the Knights by scores of 10-2 and 7-3.

Wartburg grabbed the early lead in both games, but the Beavers would respond right back both times and never look back.  The Knights scored a run in the first inning of game one only to see BVU answer right back with four in the second to take a 4-1 lead.  Joel Garcia capped the inning with a two-run double.  Wartburg got one run back in the third to make it 4-2, but that was as close as the Knights would get from there.  The Beavers put up another four spot in the fourth inning and capped things off with two more in the fifth.

That was more than enough for starter Dalton Glenn who tossed seven strong innings, allowing just the two runs while scattering five hits, striking out eight and walking only two.  Michael Demers came on and pitched two hitless innings to finish things off.

The first five batters in the BVU lineup combined to go 8-for-20 overall, including Garcia who was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI.  Jordan Mathewson was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored, Evan Taylor had two hits, including a double, and Zach Pleggenkuhle had two hits, three RBI and two runs scored.

The Knights (19-13, 9-6 A-R-C) scored single runs in both the second and third innings before BVU got the bats heated up once again with a five-run third to take the lead for good.  Logan Mueller laced a double into the gap in left center field that scored the two go-ahead runs before Jordan Mathewson added an insurance run with an RBI single.  Zack Beekman, who had two hits in the opener, pushed across another run in the fourth with an RBI single to make it 6-2.  Wartburg managed to get a solo home run in the sixth to cut the deficit to 6-3, but that was about all the Knights could manuacture against BVU starter Mark Eddie.

Grant Oseka, who finished a home run shy of the cycle, doubled home a run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 7-3.  BVU chalked up 17 hits in the contest with four going as extra-bases.

Oseka finished the game at 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored, while Mueller, Garcia and Jordan Mathewson also chipped in with three hits each.

Eddie pitched seven strong innings and improved to 3-2 on the year.  He was charged with all three runs on six hits while striking out eight and walking only one.

Buena Vista improves to 18-9 overall and a league-best 10-3 in conference play.  The team ended the day with at least a two-game lead in the loss column on every other team in the A-R-C.  It will look to go after a series win and a possible series sweep of Nebraska Wesleyan (13-15, 6-7 A-R-C) on Tuesday, April 19, when the two teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader in Storm Lake.  BVU won the opening game last Tuesday in Lincoln, 12-6.  The Prairie Wolves are coming off a series win over Luther on Friday and Saturday.  First pitch between the Beavers and Prairie Wolves is set for 3:30 p.m.
