STORM LAKE, Iowa (April 20, 2022) - The Buena Vista baseball team picked up yet another series victory on Wednesday night as it split a doubleheader at home over Nebraska Wesleyan. BVU took game one, 8-5, before the Prairie Wolves pulled away late in the finale for a 7-3 triumph.
BVU used a big five-run eighth inning during game one to break open an 8-2 lead.
Calvin Harris put BVU on the board in the second inning with a solo home run before
Grant Oseka launched one out in the sixth to give the Beavers a 3-2 lead.
Evan Taylor, along with Oseka, doubled home runs to start the scoring in the eighth before Harris,
Drew Taylor and
Logan Mueller all followed with RBI's of their own.
After Nebraska Wesleyan tried to rally with three runs in the ninth, Harris came on in relief and closed the door to secure the win and pick up his fifth save of the year.
Mason Gehling, who picked up the win during last Tuesday's 12-6 victory down in Lincoln, picked up the win again this week. He pitched 5.0 innings, allowed just two runs on six hits while striking out six.
Brayden Polzien worked 3.2 innings before giving way to Harris who struck out the only batter he faced.
Oseka was 2-for-4 in the contest with 2RBI and a pair of runs scored.
Jordan Mathewson and Mueller also tallied two hits as BVU finished with eight overall.
NWU scored single runs in the first and third innings of game two and led 2-0 before BVU cut it in half with an
Evan Taylor RBI single in the fifth. The Prairie Wolves would extend the margin to 4-1 in the sixth before BVU came right back with two runs of its own in the bottom half on a two-run double from Harris. The Beavers just couldn't quite get over the hump in the contest and NWU would tack on three more runs in the eighth to pull away.
Both Taylor brothers had two hits in the contest with Harris also adding two.
Michael Demers suffered the loss after being charged with four runs in five-plus innings of work. He struck out six and walked three.
Devon Van Houten was strong in relief, striking out three batters over two innings.
Buena Vista is now 19-10 overall (11-4 A-R-C) and will go on the road for a three-game weekend series at Luther College beginning this Friday, April 22, at 3:00 p.m.
