TUCSON, Ariz. (March 9, 2022) - The Buena Vista baseball team avenged its only loss to start the season in a big way on Wednesday afternoon by routing Emerson College, 20-9, in seven innings out at the Kino Sports Complex. The Lions had edged BVU on Monday, 10-9.
The Beavers never trailed in this contest, scoring five times in the top of the second inning to take a 5-0 lead. The Lions did make things interesting by fighting back with four runs in the home half to make it 5-4, but that was as close as the game was the rest of the way as BVU went on to score six more times in the third and five in the fourth to build a 16-4 advantage. Emerson scratched across three in its half of the fourth to make it 16-7 but BVU came back with three more runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh. The Lions ended their scoring with a pair of runs in the sixth.
Jordan Mathewson began the scoring with an RBI double before
Kyler Corcoran tripled home two runs in the first for the Beavers to make it 3-0.
Evan Taylor highlighted the six-run third with a two-run single.
Grant Oseka singled home a run in the third for BVU before adding a two-run single in the fourth.
Jordan Mathewson doubled twice in the contest and finished 3-for-5 overall with a pair of RBI and three runs scored.
Evan Taylor also chalked up three hits, scored twice and posted two RBI. Corcoran,
Caden Mathewson and Oseka all chipped in with two hits as BVU pounded out 15 hits in the contest and also took advantage of six Lions errors.
Freshman
Nolan Faber made his collegiate debut on the mound for the blue and gold and pitched the first four innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on six hits while striking out five and walking only one.
Austin Scott pitched two innings of relief for the Beavers, allowing two runs and striking out two before giving way to
Michael Demers who worked a scoreless seventh while working around one hit and a walk by getting a big double play groundout.
Buena Vista improves to 6-1 overall and will have Thursday off before resuming its spring break schedule at the Kino Sports Complex on Friday, March 11 for a 12:30 p.m. MST (1:30 p.m. CST) first pitch against Wabash College.
