TUCSON, Ariz. (March 11, 2022) - The Buena Vista baseball team jumped out to a 6-0 lead over Wabash on Friday afternoon and then pulled away again late en route to an 11-5 victory over the Little Giants.
BVU scored a run in the first inning before erupting for five in the second for the early advantage. The Beavers took advantage of a pair of Wabash miscues in the second inning to score three runs to go along with a 2-run double from
Caden Mathewson to cap the scoring.
The Little Giants hung tough and chipped away at the Beaver lead to get back within 6-5 after four innings. BVU got two of those runs back in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from
Calvin Harris followed by an RBI single off the bat of
Jordan Mathewson. The Beavers then chalked up three more runs in the top half of the ninth, including a run-scoring single from
Caden Mathewson, who finished with a pair of hits and three RBI.
Zach Beekmann finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored while
Caden Mathewson and
Evan Taylor each turned in two hits.
Brayden Polzien got the start on the hill and pitched the first four innings, allowing five runs and seven hits while striking out four and walking only two.Â
Devon Van Houten came on in relief and worked a scoreless and hitless 1.2 innings, striking out one and walking two whil earning the victory.Â
Morgan Smith worked out of a couple jams during his 2.1 innings and struck out four. Harris got the final three outs, including one strikeout to help send the team to its third straight victory.
Wabash (7-2) which had knocked off DII Bemidji State on Thursday, had its five-game win streak come to an end. Noah Lubbenhusen tripled and finished with three hits overall to help lead the Little Giants which tallied three extra-base hits and 11 base knocks overall.
Buena Vista improves to 7-1 overall and is scheduled to play a pair of games on Saturday night. First pitch against the University of Redlands (6-7) at 4:00 p.m. MST (5:00 p.m. CST) and then will face #24 Chapman at 7:30 p.m. MST (8:30 p.m. MST).
