TUCSON, Ariz. (March 8, 2022) - The Buena Vista baseball team batted around and scored eight times in the eighth inning on Tuesday afternoon to overcome a 7-2 deficit and knock off Bethany Lutheran College 10-7 at the Kino Sports Complex.
The Vikings held a 2-1 lead to start the sixth inning before scoring four times to extend it to a 6-1 contest. Both teams then traded runs in the seventh before BVU exploded with a big eighth.
Grant Oseka got the scoring started with a pinch hit RBI single that scored
Calvin Harris and moved
Evan Taylor to third.Â
Drew Taylor then came on to pinch hit and lofted a ball into shallow right field that was misplayed by the right fielder and skipped past, allowing a run to score and putting runners at second and third with only one out.
Zach Pleggenkuhle then swung and missed at a ball that would skip away from the catcher allowing him to reach safely and load the bases. Following a
Jordan Mathewson strikeout, freshman
Joel Garcia came through with a clutch two-run single for his third base knock of the day before Zach Beekmann followed next with a three-run blast that carried over the right field fence to put the Beavers in front, 9-7. After a walk and a stolen base from
Caden Mathewson, he then headed to third on a wild pitch as the catcher then overthrew the third baseman, allowing Mathewson to score the game's final run.
Harris came on in relief to pitch a perfect ninth which included one strikeout.
Garcia finished 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and three RBI and is now hitting .545 on the year (12-for-22) with eight doubles and 13 RBI.Â
Evan Taylor was 2-for-3 with a triple and is also hitting over .520 on the year. Beekman's home run was his only hit of the contest and marks his second home run in the last three games.
Dalton Glenn got the start on the hill for BVU and pitched the first five innings and got the no decision. He allowed just two runs and scattered seven hits while striking out nine and walking only two.Â
Michael Demers was tagged with four runs in one inning of relief while
Devon Van Houten issued the final run.Â
Spencer Holmes earned the win after entering in the seventh inning and working 1.2 scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Harris earns his first save of the year and the eighth of his career.
