LAST WEEK: The Beavers started the week on a strong note by knocking off league-leading Dubuque on the road, 65-60, but then came up just short at Coe on Saturday, 65-62. The loss to the Kohawks slipped the Beavers down into fourth overall in the A-R-C standings, a game back of Coe and two behind second-place Wartburg. Jake Thompson led the team in scoring during both games, registering 20 points, eight rebounds against the Spartans and 19 points, eight boards against the Kohawks.
ABOUT SIMPSON – The Storm snapped a season-long 13-game losing streak on Saturday with a 75-61 home victory over visiting Luther College after having lost to the Norse at the start of the week. The team's other league victory was a 10-point triumph over Coe College back on December 4 - which had been the team's last victory before Saturday. The team is averaging 66.0ppg and shooting 42 percent from the field. Andrew Curran has helped lead the way offensively at 11.8ppg and 53 assists. Chris Honz has been the most consistent shooter at 55.8 percent. He's also been a force on the defensive end, hauling in 6.4 rebounds. Honz is the only other player averaging double figures in scoring (10.3ppg).Â
ABOUT WARTBURG– The Knights continue to put together a strong season having dropped conference games to Dubuque, Buena Vista and Simpson. The team is currently sitting second in the league standings by one game over the Kohawks and two clear of BVU with four regular season games yet to play. The team is putting up points, averaging nearly 76.0ppg during conference play which is second in the conference while shooting a league-best 47.8 percent from the field overall. Drew Olson leads the team and ranks fourth in the A-R-C in scoring during league play at 16.0ppg while shooting nearly 40 percent from behind the arc. Defensively, Olson is averaging a team-high 5.3 rebounds per contest and is leading the league in steals per outing (3.8).
ABOUT BUENA VISTA - With three regular season games remaining, including two this week inside of Siebens Fieldhouse, the Beavers are looking to solidify its position for the American Rivers Conference. With a pair of wins this week, the team can pull within at least one game of second in the league standings. Jake Thompson has been a force over the last few games, leading the team in scoring last week, averaging 20 points and eight rebounds per contest. He's currently ranked eighth in the A-R-C in scoring (13.2ppg) and third in rebounding (6.3rpg). He's also leading the way in assists per game at 5.7 and is fourth in assist/turnover ratio (1.8). Michael Demers leads the team in scoring and sits fifth in the A-R-C at 15.1ppg during league play. He comes ino the week with 189 made three-point buckets and is eighth in the league at 1.7 makes per contest. As a team, BVU comes in ranked fifth in scoring at 72.5ppg and is tops in three-point makes with 104.
