Loras Holds off Men's Basketball 75-67

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Dec. 3, 2022) - Junior Zane Neubaum led four players in double digits with 17 points to lead the Buena Vista men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon, but it was Loras College holding off the Beavers, 75-67, in an American Rivers Conference game on Lillis Court.

Neubaum, the A-R-C's leading scorer, was 5-of-13 shooting and made 6-of-9 at the free-throw line. Ryan Mendoza and Michael Santich scored 13 points apiece with Santich hauling in seven rebounds and Mendoza six. Simon Daniel was 4-of-4 at the free-throw line and finished with six points to go along with his team-best four assists.

BVU heated up from the field in the second half, making 15-of-30 attempts (50 percent) after being held to only 30.7 percent over the first 20 minutes (8-of-26). The team was 7-of-23 from downtown (30.4 percent) and made 14-of-20 at the charity stripe.

Loras scored the game's first four points before the Beavers came back with five straight to take their only lead of the game at 5-4. The Duhawks then went on a 12-3 run to go up 17-7 and led by as many as 13 points on multiple occasions in the half. Neubaum cut the deficit to 31-22 at the break with his bucket and 1:19 left.

BVU continued to claw its way back to start the second half, getting three-point makes from Mendoza and Gunner Reed during an 18-9 spurt that was capped by Neubaum's layup that tied the game for the first time at 40-40. Loras seemed to have an answer for any threat that the Beavers tried to make in the half, responding with a quick 7-0 surge, and never relinquishing the lead. The Duhawks pushed the margin back to double-digits a 56-46. BVU again made a run to get within 58-54 at the 4:41 mark, but Loras again responded with six straight to build a 10-point cushion with 3:41 left. The Beavers were able to get as close as seven down the stretch but Loras, who made six more free-throws in the game than the Beavers, scored its final seven points at the free-throw line to preserve the eight-point victory.

The Duhawks (4-3, 3-0 A-R-C) shot 45 percent from the field and got a game-high 25 points from Tyler Bass.

Buena Vista (4-4, 0-2 A-R-C) will look to snap a two-game skid when it returns home on December 7 to host Nebraska Wesleyan (3-4, 1-1 A-R-C) at 7:30 p.m. inside of Siebens Fieldhouse.
