COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Nov. 26, 2022) - The Buena Vista women's basketball team couldn't overcome a slow start on Saturday against Colorado College and fell to the Tigers in the final game of the Rocky Mountain Thanksgiving Classic, 94-55.
Buena Vista was held to just six first half field goals and scored just 13 points while Colorado College went 7-for-18 from downtown during that stretch to lead 46-13 at the half. Both teams came out firing from long distance in the third quarter with both sides making four long range shots, but those four field goals proved to be the only makes for BVU in the period as the Tigers extended the margin to 75-33 heading to the fourth. Both teams went on to make eight field goals over the final 10 minutes with BVU also going 5-of-6 at the free-throw line but it wasn't near enough.
Maddie Hilgendorf turned in a career-high 10 points off the bench for the Beavers while
Vanessa Hamlett also added 10 points and nine rebounds.
Danika Demers and
McKenna Cone were right behind with eight points with Demers also dishing out three assists.
BVU finished at 30.9 percent shooting for the field overall, including 5-of-17 from downtown, while going 16-of-22 at the free-throw line (72.7 percent).
Colorado College (3-4) had five players score in double figures, led by Laura Strenk's game-high 16 points, as the Tigers shot 47.2 percent overall, including 13-of-34 from beyond the arc (38.2 percent).
Buena Vista dips to 4-3 on the year and will now shift gears to American Rivers Conference play which begins for the team on November 30 at the University of Dubuque. Tip-off against the Spartans is set for 5:30 p.m.
