STORM LAKE, Iowa (January 8, 2022) - The Buena Vista women's basketball team led 30-9 in the second quarter but couldn't hold onto the big lead as Coe College stormed all the way back and scored five points in the final six seconds to stun the Beavers 59-56 inside of Siebens Fieldhouse.
The Beavers led 13-9 heading to the second stanza before scoring the first 17points of the quarter to take it's largest lead of the afternoon. They shot over 50 percent from the field in each quarter and were 4-of-6 from long range.
Coe, however, turned the tides in the second half, holding BVU to just 3-of-12 from the field in the third quarter and just 1-of-10 from beyond the arc in the half. The Kohawks, who were held to just 8-of-30 shooting in the first half caught fire over the final 20 minutes by going 14-of-24 from the field.
BVU held a 41-37 advantage heading to the final frame and continued to stay in front at 54-48 with under three minutes to go. Coe would make one of its three long range buckets to make it 54-51 with 2:36 to play. Neither team scored for over two minutes before
Mallory McCall made the first of two attempts from the free-throw line to make it a two possession game at 55-51 with only 19 seconds left.
After a timeout, the Kohawks got a quick layup with 14 seconds remaining to make it 55-53 and McCall had a chance to make it a two possession game again but came up short on the first attempt before sinking the second to make it 56-53. Aftter another timeout, Ellie Wisner then took a pass and turned in drilled a three-pointer just in front of the Coe bench to tie things up at 56-56 with 5.2 seconds left.
BVU called a timeout to advance the ball and on the inbounds pass from just in front of the Beaver bench, Alyse Southard knocked the ball free and went the distance for the go-ahead layup with 1.2 seconds left. She was also fouled on the play and sunk the free-throw to make it a three-point lead. The Beavers called timeout to advance the ball one final time, and
Taylor Krager had her three-point attempt blocked.
McCall led BVU with 13 points while Krager and
Lindsey Anhalt each added 12.Â
Vanessa Hamlett also reached double figures with 10 points. Krager led the way with eight rebounds, Anhalt recorded four steals and Mya Guziski dished out a career-best seven assists.
Wisner led all scorers with 18 points for Coe which improved to 5-10 (2-4 A-R-C).
Buena Vista is now 4-8 overall (2-4 A-R-C) and hosts Central College (2-8, 1-4 A-R-C) on January 12 at 5:30 p.m.
