STORM LAKE, IA Buena Vista University's women's soccer team fell just short of a home crowd victory Wednesday night, as it took double overtime to topple the team. The first 90 minutes couldn't decide the match, and it wasn't until the second overtime that Mt. Marty closed out the non-conference game in Storm Lake 2-1.
The Lancers were the first ones on the board as Tianna Bumbaca-Kuehl recovered a loose ball and netted the 18-yard goal. The two teams were unable to net another goal until late in regulation, when BVU's
Eliza Evans kicked in a goal from just inside of the box, following an 30 yard assist from
Chloe Lippert. The Beaver goal came with just 7:30 minutes left to go in the game, but the momentum carried the Beavers into the first overtime tied up at 1-1.
After neither team was able to net another goal in the first overtime, one more period was added to the board before to try and decide a winner . However, at the 102 mark, Becky Willkins put in her only goal of the night from 18 yards out, and ended the comeback chance for the Beavers.
On the night, Mt. Marty threw 16 shots on goal with the two netted, the Beavers were able to put five shots on goal, but had the better success rate putting up 1 goal per 5 shots. Combining for seven stopped shots were Beaver keepers
Madelyn Bigalke and
Austyn Bruening.
The loss gives the Beavers an 0-1 start to the season, but the team gets home field advantage once again this Saturday as they play host to Bethany Lutheran College at 12pm.
