Brett Groen begins his 10th season as head men's tennis coach in 2025-26 and continues to serve as the university's Director of Tennis Operations.

Groen is the program's only coach over at least the last 20 years to lead the team to multiple six-win overall seasons, and he has done so three times (2019, 2022, 2025). The team's eight overall wins this past season was its highest total in 12 years.

During the 2018 season - which was Groen's third at the helm - he guided the program to its highest win total in four years.  The team had captured a pair of wins in 2019 before the majority of its spring season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In his first three seasons, he coached at least one all-conference performer, including a singles and doubles player during the 2016-17 campaign.  He helped guide the doubles tandem of Chris Habermann and Jesse Brace to a school record 18 wins in 2016-17 with a league-best six of those coming in conference play.

Along with the athletic accolades his teams and individuals have achieved, Groen has also seen eight players earn academic all-conference during his tenure.

Groen served as the head girls tennis coach at Spencer High School from 2006 until joining BVU, and prior to that was the head boys tennis coach at Spirit Lake High School from 1996-2005.

In his career, he has coached three Lakes Conference team championships, including the 1999 Spirit Lake High School team that went on to take state runner-up accolades in Class 1A.  In addition, he has coached multiple individual state qualifiers at both schools, including three seasons in which he had both singles and doubles qualifiers.

A Spencer, Iowa native, he was a four-year tennis player himself at Northwestern College in Orange City (1990-93) where he received his bachelor of arts degree in Communications.  As a senior, he was the Nebraska-Iowa Athletic Conference number two singles tournament champion, while the Red Raiders finishes second as a team.

In addition to his coaching duties at BVU, Groen continues to own and operate Spencer Trophy & Awards in Spencer, Iowa.
