Beavers Win a Pair of Thrilling Games against Storm to begin A-R-C Play

STORM LAKE, Iowa (March 20, 2021) - Sophomore Dominic Roderick was inserted into the line-up as a defensive replacement late in the game but it was his bat that made the big splash in the ninth inning as he scorched a two-strike pitch down the right field line to score the game-winning run and send the Beavers to a doubleheader sweep with a 15-14 triumph in the nightcap Saturday night.

Simpson went up 6-2 after just two innings before BVU stormed back with eight runs of its own in the third for a 10-6 lead.  Senior Nick Henrichs highlighted the inning with a big three-run triple that came inches away from being a grandslam to dead center.  The hit broke a 6-6 tie and gave BVU its first lead of the game.  Henrichs then scored on a wild pitch to make it a four-run cushion.

A pair of two-run doubles to left center field for Simpson in the fifth tied things up at 10-10 before the Storm added two more in the frame, along with a solo home run in the sixth for a 13-10 lead.

Parker Truesdell began the rally in the seven for the Beavers with an RBI single before he came around to score later in the inning on a wild pitch to make it 13-12.

Tyler Tennyson then came through in the clutch with a monster two-run home run over the scoreboard in left field in the eighth inning to put BVU back ontop 14-13. Simpson's Noah Sacco led off the ninth inning with a solo shot that pulled the Storm even at 14-14.

BVU loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the night before Roderick's heroics lifted the Beavers to their 14th straight home victory, dating back to the 2019 campaign.

Henrichs finished 3-for-5 in the contest with the three RBI and also scored three times.  Tennyson notched a career-best five hits, had the two big RBI, and scored twice while Calvin Harris chipped in with a career-high four hits and three runs scored.  Harris also came in to get the final two outs in the ninth inning, including a big strikeout, while picking up the win.

Tennyson also had a big outing in the opener, throwing a complete-game four-hitter with six strikeouts.  He was also 1-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.

Easton Bahr doubled home the game's first run in the second inning to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead.  Jordan Mathewson made it 3-0 with a run-double later in the inning before scoring on a fielding error by the right fielder to make it 4-0.

Simpson got one run back in the fourth before BVU added a run in each of the next two innings for a 6-1 cushion.  The Storm did plate two runs in the sixth to get within 6-3 but that ended up being the game's final score.

Buena Vista has now won four straight games overall to improve to 4-3 on the year (2-0 A-R-C).  The same two teams will be back out on the diamond on Sunday afternoon for the final two games of the series.  First pitch of game one is set for 1:00 p.m.
