Baseball Drops Season Opening DH to Westminster

TOPEKA, Kan. (February 27, 2021) - The Buena Vista baseball team got its 2021 campaign off to a rough start on Saturday afternoon as the Beavers were swept in a season-opening doubleheader against Westminster by scores of 6-4 and 11-6.

BVU took a 3-2 lead to the fifth inning of the opener but was unable to close the door.  The Blue Jays rallied with a pair of runs in both the fifth and seventh innings to build a 6-4 advantage while the Beavers couldn't get the clutch hit and had to settle for just one additional run in the seventh.

Senior Nick Henrichs finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored for BVU while sophomore Jordan Matheweson doubled and scored twice.  Fellow sophomore Mason Gehling suffered the loss, despite allowing just one earned run over five innings.  He scattered four hits, struck out eight and walked only two.  Senior Tyler Tennyson came on in relief to pitch the final four frames, allowed two runs on four hits and struck out nine.

Westminster led off the home half of the first inning with a solo home run before adding four more runs in the frame to build an early 5-1 lead.  A triple by Caden Mathewson in the fourth gave BVU its second run before Tennyson belted his first home run of the season to get the team within 7-4 in the sixth.  Westminster, however, responded with four straight runs to break things open at 11-4 and the Beavers tried to rally late but managed just two more runs in the eighth.

Six different players landed one hit in the game for BVU as Tennyson led the way with his two RBI and two runs scored.  Zack Beekmann also added a hit and scored twice.

Dalton Glenn took the loss on the hill, going just 2.1 innings and being charged with five runs (four earned) on five hits.  Aiden Brock and Calvin Harris combined to go the rest of the way as each allowed three runs apiece.

Buena Vista (0-2) will look to bounce back on Sunday during the final game of the three-game series.  First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
