FOREST CITY, Iowa (December 16, 2021) - The Buena Vista women's basketball team went on the road Thursday night to play its final contest before the holiday break but fell at Waldorf University, 65-52. The game was played as an exhibition contest fo the Beavers.
Sophomore
Lindsey Anhalt turned in 11 points for the Beavers while freshman
Taylor Krager and junior
Vanessa Hamlett each added 10.
Mallory McCall returned to the lineup and just missed out on double figures with eight points. Both McCall and Hamlett hauled in a team-high seven rebounds with Hamlett also adding a career-high four steals.
The Beavers finished the game shooting 31 percent overall from the field and was 3-of-17 from long range. It got the job done at the charity stripe by making 13-of-14 attempts.
Waldorf built a 14-5 lead midway throughout the opening quarter before BVU cut the gap down to 16-13 heading to the second. The Beavers came all the way back and went in front 19-18 following a layup from
Anna Lundahl early in the second before the Warriors responded with five quick points to regain a 23-19 lead. The two teams went into a scoring drought over the next five minutes before McCall's layup made it 23-21 with just over three minutes left in the half. Waldorf closed strong and took a 27-21 lead into the break.
Waldorf began to pull away in the opening minutes of the second half, building the game's first double-digit margin at 33-23 with three minutes gone by. BVU was held to only five points in the third quarter and trailed 45-28 heading to the fourth. The Beavers fell down by as many as 21 in the final stanza but did make a late charge and pulled within 60-52 following a McCall layup with just under one minute to play. The Beavers had a chance to make it a two-possession game in the final 45 seconds but turned the ball over and the Warriors would make 5-of-6 at the free-throw line down the stretch to secure the win.
Tina Lair-VanMeter led Waldorf (6-6) with a game-high 15 points as four Warriors were in double figures. The team was aided by an 8-of-17 performance from long range.
Buena Vista heads into the holiday break and will be off until December 30 when it hosts Hamline University inside of SIebens Fieldhouse at 2:00 p.m.
