Women's Basketball Loses Heartbreaker in OT

STORM LAKE, Iowa (November 27, 2021) - Freshman Taylor Krager drilled a three-pointer from the top of the key with 0.4 seconds left to force overtime, but it was the University of Wisconsin-River Falls holding on in the extra period to hand the Buena Vista women's basketball team a heartbreaking 79-77 home loss on Saturday afternoon.

BVU trailed 72-67 with 15 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter when Krager was fouled in the left corner in front of the BVU bench on a three-point attempt with 10 seconds to go.  She stepped to the line and would miss the first attempt but then calmly sink the next two.  The Beavers would then quickly foul and the Falcons would miss both attempts setting up the thrilling finish.  BVU grabbed the rebound off the missed shot and called timeout to advance the ball across midcourt where it would inbound in front of its own bench coming out of the timeout.

There was just under five seconds to play when the ball was put back in play and that's when Krager took a pass from Mya Guzinski and drilled a contested three-point attempt just before the buzzer sounded.

It was back-and-forth in the extra period with the team's trading baskets.  The Falcons went in front for the first time during overtime at 76-75 after a 1-of-2 trip to the free-throw line. Following a missed shot for the Beavers, however, the Falcons were able to grab the rebound and again make 1-of-2 at the line to make it a 77-75 contest.  The Beavers would turn it over on their ensuing possession and UW-RF made both free-throws as BVU was forced to foul and that would secure the win.

Buena Vista began the game on a 21-3 run and would lead 23-11 after the first quarter.  BVU shot 56 percent from the field in the opening half, but the Falcons would hang around and get within 37-30 at the half.  BVU continued to lead 53-50 headig to the final stanza, but the Beavers went cold from the field, making just 3-of-16 shot attempts as the Falcons were able to build the five-point cushion late.

Krager finished the game shooting 6-of-10 overall and 6-of-9 at the free-throw line to set a career-high for the third straight game at 20 points.  She also grabbed six rebounds and dished out two assists.  Sophomore Vanessa Hamlett followed with 16 points and 13 rebounds for her second double-double of the year.  Hannah Whitver and Lindsey Anhalt each turned in 10 points with Anhalt also adding six boards.  Mya Guzinski grabbed a career-best 10 rebounds and also dished out a career-high five assists.

The Beavers shot just under 40 percent from the field overall and went to the free-throw line a season-high 33 times and making 22.  The two teams combined for 67 free-throw attempts in the contest.

Macy Nilsen turned in a game-high 27 points to lead the Falcons (4-2) in scoring.

Buena Vista is now 2-3 overall this season and will now begin American Rivers Conference play on Wednesday, Decmeber 1, by hosting the University of Dubuque at 5:30 p.m.
