STORM LAKE, Iowa (December 1, 2021) - The Buena Vista women's basketball team shot 50 percent from the field and outscored the University of Dubuque, 21-8, in the fourth quarter to overcome a 13-point halftime deficit and knock off the Spartans, 76-67, to begin their American Rivers Conference schedule.
Freshman
Taylor Krager turned in a game-high 25 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out three assists to help lead the way. She finished the game shooting 7-of-15 from the field, including a career-best four three-point makes, while also making 7-of-11 from the free-throw line.Â
Lindsey Anhalt scored a career-high 15 points while
Vanessa Hamlett and
Hannah Whitver scored 12 and 10, respectively. Hamlett also hauled in a career-high 18 rebounds for her third double-double of the year while Whitver dished out a game and career-high six assists.
The Beavers had their best shooting night of the year by going 24-of-48 overall from the field, despite just 4-of-14 from distance and 24-of-35 from the free-throw line.Â
Dubuque took advantage of early turnovers by BVU in the first quarter to lead 26-16 after one quarter and extended the margin to 46-33 at the half. The Beavers scored seven of the first eight points in the second half and kept the momentum going from there as they pulled back within fur at 59-55 heading to the fourth. It was all Buena Vista in the final frame, scoring the first six points to grab the lead for the first time since it was 2-0, and making 10 free-throws in the quarter to aid in the comeback.
The Spartans, now 4-2 overall (0-2 A-R-C) were held to 38 percent shooting and just 3-of-17 from behind the arc. Tabria Thomas and Lauren Livingston each turnd in 19 points to lead the way with Kathleen Mathias adding 14.
Buena Vista improves to 3-3 overall (1-0 A-R-C) and hosts Loras College (4-2, 1-1 A-C) on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
