STORM LAKE, Iowa (November 10, 2021) - The Buena Vista wrestling team opened the dual portion of its schedule on Wednesday night, hosting Northwestern College (IA) in a non-conference dual inside of Siebens Fieldhouse, but the Beavers came up short in head coach Sean White's coaching debut, 28-11.

BVU came out strong, winning two of the first three matches to go in front, 8-3.  Senior Byron Fleming (125lbs) got things started with a big 15-0 technical fall early in the third period before Axel Hernandez (141lbs) came through with a hard fought 7-3 decision.  Afer the Red Raiders notched consecutive victories to go in front for the first time at 10-8, the Beavers got a thrilling 17-10 comeback victory by junior Garret Bruce at 165 pounds.  He was trailing 6-3 early on before coming through with a big hip-toss late in the second period that vaulted him to a 9-6 lead.  He then locked up a cradle later in the third period which helped him pull away late. and put the Beavers back on top at 11-10.

Caleb Rojas got a penalty point in the closing seconds to tie the score at 2-2 but would drop the match, 3-2, as a result of riding time.  Erron Aldon nearly closed the dual out on a high note for BVU but came up just short by falling in OT, 5-3.

Northwestern (1-0) was winner by fall at both 184 and 197 to pull away late in what was the first duals for both teams this season.

Buena Vista will look to bounce back as it continues its non-conference schedule this Saturday afternoon by traveling to Collegeville, Minn., to face St. John's University in a 1:00 p.m. dual.  The team will be back in Siebens Fieldhouse next Wednesday, November 17, to begin American Rivers Conference action by hosting third-ranked Loras College at 7:00 p.m.
