LINCOLN, NE An exciting finish wrapped up the fall season for Buena Vista University's women's tennis season as they topple Nebraska Wesleyan on the road 5-4. The back-and-forth match saw lead changes throughout the afternoon, before it was tied 4-4, with one final match to decide the day. BVU's
Alexis McGinnis would get the final team point in a thrilling 3 set match and help the team get it's second ARC win.
Buena Vista found itself down 1-2 after the three doubles matches, but the win by
Nicole Lange and McGinnis at No 1 would prove to be a huge team point. "Nicole & Alexis pulled out a tight doubles match, which really gave us hope of still being able to win the meet, because a 0-3 deficit going into singles is extremely difficult to overcome," Coach
Dan Taylor talked about the single point win. The Beaver duo won their match 8-6, while the No 2 and No 3 teams fell 1-8 for both scores.
In singles, BVU would need to pull off 4 of the 6 matches with wins to have the match, a feat they did with wins at 1, 2, 4 and 5. But even the losses were some of the best tennis of the year according to Coach Taylor, "In singles the ladies really shined; even Lexie and Madison, who weren't able to get victories, played really good points throughout their matches. And Nicole, Alexis, Gabby and Susi just played outstanding singles matches today. We were down 3-4 and needed both Gabby and Alexis to win, and Gabby closed hers out first with a 2nd set tiebreak, and Alexis, who lost her first set 1-6, was able to turn her match around completely and pulled out a 7-5 third set to seal it."
Nicole Lange would start the singles win train with a two set match, 6-4, 6-2 at No 1 singles.
Gabby Kardell and
Susi Phung also picked up wins at No 4 and No 5 in straight sets as well. McGinnis was the last on the courts, and finished off the victory with a 7-5 third set thriller.
"I can't think of a better way to wrap up our fall season. I thought everybody played some of their best tennis of the year, and the improvement they made throughout the season was on full display. I am so proud of how the ladies performed today, and their hard work this fall really paid off," Taylor continued.
The Beavers will be off until February 26 when they will travel to Minneapolis for a 2 match weekend to start the spring season.
