Women's Tennis Edged in 4-3 Thriller at Home to Martin Luther

BVU senior Taylor Fritz prepares for her return during a thrilling third set tiebreaker victory on Senior Day against Martin Luther on Apr. 9, 2026.

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Apr. 8, 2026) - The Buena Vista women's tennis team returned home on Wednesday afternoon, hosting Martin Luther College, but the Beavers came up just short, 4-3, in what turned out to be a thrilling match throughout.

The Knights scored the first point of the contest by sweeping through all three doubles matches. In singles, one of the most thrilling and dramatic matches of the entire day was at No. 1. Hannah Higgins came out and won the opening set for the Beavers, 6-4 but then was edged 6-3 in the second to force the tiebreaker. It was back-and-forth throughout that third set which was eventually won, 13-11, by Martin Luther (2-6).

Junior Macy Weller was victorious in straight sets by scores of 6-1, 6-1 to earn her fourth singles victory of the year.

Senior Taylor Fritz, playing on Senior Day, won in thrilling fashion after rallying to come out on top of a third set tiebreaker at No. 3, 5-7, 6-4, 10-4. She also matched Weller with four singles wins on the season.

It was so amazing to see her win today,” said BVU head coach Dan Taylor. “She played the tiebreaker of her life and capped it off with one of her trademark big serves on match point; it couldn't have been drawn up any better. She has been an amazing teammate and example, and we are going to really miss her.”

Freshman Abbey Meseck secured the team's final victory of the match-up by winning her No. 4 bout in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.

Looking at the line-ups and ratings coming into this match, it looked like it would be incredibly close, and it was indeed,” added Taylor. “It literally came down to one single point to decide the team score outcome. This is a great improvement from last year, as we lost to Martin Luther 7-0 and now were pretty much dead even with them.

“It once again points to how much our team has improved this season and how hard they are working. We had senior day for Taylor Fritz as well. She started in our program halfway into the season her freshman year, and hadn't even picked up a racquet before. Her hard work and dedication paid off, and she saw dramatic improvement and worked her way up to be our number three player and was extremely competitive every match.”

Buena Vista is now 3-17 on the year and will wrap up its season on Apr. 27 with a non-conference home match against Crown College. That match will be held at the Storm Lake High School and begin at 3 p.m.
