Baseball Moves to 5-0 with DH Sweep on Saturday

TOPEKA, Kan. (February 29, 2020) - The Buena Vista baseball team remained perfect on the year with a doubleheader sweep here on Saturday afternoon against Grinnell College at the Bettis Sports Complex.

The Beavers scored in each of the first four innings of the opener before breaking the game open with four runs in the seventh inning to win 15-7.  Game two was a pitcher's duel until the sixth inning where BVU plated seven runs en route to a 9-3 victory.

Senior Tyler Tennyson had a monster day for the Beavers by going 6-for-9 at the plate with a double, homerun and three RBI while also securing his first career save by tossing the final 3.2 innings of game one. Fellow senior Joe Rock was 5-for-8 on the day with a double and five RBI while Zack Beekmann chipped in with a pair of doubles, a home run and scored four times.

BVU finished the day with 25 hits, including three home runs and 10 total extra-bases.

The Beavers opened up a 4-0 lead in game one before the Pioneers rallied back to tie it up at 6-6 with five runs in the fourth.  Rock put BVU back in front for good with an RBI single in the bottom half before Coleman Roberts doubled home another.  Grinnell got back within 9-7 in the sixth before BVU added a run in the home half and four more in the seventh to take control.

Austin Scott came on in relief of starter Nick Henrichs in the fourth inning and pitched 1.2 innings, allowing just one run and one hit to earn the win.  Tennyson then came on to close things out, allowing just one hit and striking out three.

In game two, both teams combined for just three hits going into the sixth innings before the offenses came to life.  Grinnell (0-2) took its first lead of the day by scoring twice in the inning to knock out starter Mason Gehling, who was tough again in his second collegiate start.  The reigning American Rivers Conference Pitcher of the Week pitched 5.2 innings, allowed just two runs and five hits while matching his career-high with six strikeouts.

BVU responded in the home half by scoring seven times, including a go-ahead two-run home run by junior Coleman Roberts.  Easton Bahr singled home a run later in the inning before Ryley McGregor capped the inning with a two-run single.  Beekman then finished the scoring with his second home run of the year - a two-run blast - in the seventh to make it 9-2.  Senior Bryce Rheault joined Tennyson with two hits in the contest as nine different Beavers scored one run.

Dalton Glenn came on in relief of Gehling and pitched 2.1 innings to pick up his first career victory.  He allowed just one hit and struck out three.

Buena Vista improves to 5-0 overall and will look to keep its perfect start in tact when it faces the Pioneers for another doubleheader on Sunday starting at 11 a.m.
