STORM LAKE, Iowa (February 14, 2020) - The Buena Vista men's tennis team will officially kick-off the spring season for the Beavers with a pair of non-conference matches up north in the state of Minnesota beginning tonight against North Central (Minn.). The team will then face the University of Northwestern-St. Paul on Saturday.

Last Time Out
Friday is the spring opener for the Beavers. They played a pair of non-conference matches back in the fall and went 1-1 in those contests, including a 5-2 victory over Northwestern College (Iowa) on September 24.
About North Central
The Rams are opening their spring schedule against the Beavers and are coming off a 2018-19 campaign in which they finished 2-14 overall, including a 1-6 league mark. The team won 10 total singles matches and five doubles match-ups. It is a young roster this season with only one senior and a pair of juniors.
About Northwestern-St. Paul
The Eagles have played a pair of matches to begin their 2020 schedule and came up short in both contests. The most recent was an 8-1 setback against Saint John's University (Minn.) on February 8. There are no seniors on this year's roster and just one total upperclassman. A season ago, the team went 85-59 overall in singles matches. Sophomore Austin Bricker was last year's leader in wins as a freshman with a 15-9 mark.
About Buena Vista
The Beavers bring back a wealth of experience and talent from last season and look to start the spring schedule on a strong note after some strong efforts during a limited fall schedule. Seniors
Aaron Pluym and
Andrew Boell combined for 12 singles wins a year ago with Pluym going 5-5 over his final 10 matches of the year. Junior
Jake Thompson, who will not join the team for competitions until the conclusion of basketball season, notched eight wins, as BVU posted 40 singles victories. Thompspn also paired with sophomore
Danny Kramer to win a team-leading seven doubles matches. Tied with that pair were
Kris Mintle and
Aaron Mumm, who also went 3-4 in conference play.
On Deck
After this weekend, the Beavers will squeeze in a non-conference match at Cornell College next Saturday, February 22, before taking time off until it heads out to Hilton Head, S.C., to play four matches over spring break from March 16-19. The home opener is March 28 when the Beavers open A-R-C play against Loras College.
