Waverly, IOWA Back on the road again Monday night, the Women's Tennis team was shut-out against one of the ARC's top teams in Waverly. Wartburg handed the Beavers a 9-0 loss, just a few days after BVU notched it's first win of the season. Coach Taylor knew going in that the Knights would be tough, "Wartburg is a very good team, just behind Luther for the top spot in the conference. They have tremendous depth, so there isn't much of a drop-off in level as you go down their lineup."
Despite a marked improvement in doubles over the past few matches, including this one, the Beavers still weren't able to grab a win in the 8-game match ups. At number 1 and number 3, the Knights held the Beavers scoreless, but at number 2,
Nicole Lange and
Alexis McGinnis stayed with their opponents early, 3-3, but dropped 5 of the next 6 games and the match. "Alexis and Nicole also played well at 2 doubles, staying right with them early before Wartburg pulled away," Coach Taylor observed.
Turning to singles play, the Beavers hoped to battle back and put some pressure on Wartburg, but again the depth from top to bottom got the best of BVU.
Rachel Brockney battled tough in many games, going to deuce often, but she was still knocked off by one of the best singles players in the conference, 0-6 2-6. McGinnis was the lone Beaver to take a set off of her opponent on the day, going toe-to-toe with Phillips and even forcing two sets to tie-breaks before eventually falling, 6-7(3-7), 6-3, (4-10). "Alexis played the best tennis I've seen her play today, winning a set off of their number 2 player and having an opportunity to win with a tiebreak," Coach Taylor said.
The team doesn't have much of a break this week, as they go back on the road Wednesday to Nebraska Wesleyan and then a home match Thursday against Central, all followed up by the ARC Individual Tournament Saturday in Des Moines.
