Box Score CEDAR RAPIDS - Timothy Jeffries scored 16 points with Michael Demers coming off the bench to add 14, but it was Coe College hitting six of its 11 three-point buckets in the second half to help hold off the Beavers inside of Kohawk Arena on Wednesday night, 71-67.
Jeffries was 7-of-12 from the field, including 2-of-4 from downtown, before fouling out of the game in the final minutes. Demers connected on 4-of-7 shots from beyond the arc as the duo combined for six of the team's made eight three-point buckets in the contest. Garrett Sittner dished out a career-best five assists.
Buena Vista shot over 47 percent from the field overall and was 8-of-24 from long range,. but the team was held to only five free-throw attempts in the contest (3-of-5). The Kohawks, meanwhile, made 25 trips to the charity stripe and made 18.
The game featured eight lead changes and a pair of ties with neither side holding more than a seven-point cushion. BVU led 54-53 with just under eight minutes to play in regulation after a Demers three-point bucket, but Josh Schmitt answered right back with a trey of his own to give the Kohawks the lead back for good.
Brendan Gary made a pair of free-throws to tie it at 56-56, but a three-pointer and a pair of free-throws pushed Coe back up by five.
Demers later tied it at 61-61 with another three-point bucket, but Coe came right back down and got a basket and a free-throw to take the lead back at 64-61 and BVU was unable to get any closer than one from there. Lincoln Rock made it a two-point contest with 14 seconds left, but the Kohawks made 6-of-8 at the line down the stretch to secure the win.
Buena Vista drops to 9-12 overall and 3-9 in American Rivers Conference play. The team sits two games back in the loss column for the sixth and final seed into the conference tournament with four games to go. The first of those comes on Saturday at second-ranked Nebraska Wesleyan starting at 4:00 p.m.
