Box Score Buena Vista built a 44-34 halftime lead against visiting Loras College on Saturday afternoon, but the Duhawks outscored the Beavers by 12 in the third quarter and hung on in the end for a 76-73 victory.
Jasmine Demers recorded her fourth straight double-double with a game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds. Morgan Muhlbauer followed with 19 points and seven boards while McKenna Whitehill was a perfect 5-of-5 from the field for 13 points. Holly Schneider also reached double digits with 10 points as Claudia Larsen chimed in with seven points, six rebounds and six assists.
Buena Vista shot a season-high 54.2 percent from the field and 9-of-17 from downtown, but the Beavers couldn't overcome 24 turnovers which led to 28 Duhawk points. Loras, meanwhile, turned it over just nine times.
Demers hit a three-pointer and followed it up with a layup with 1:10 left in the opening half to give BVU its largest lead of the game at 44-32. Schneider connected on a three-pointer early in the second half to keep the advantage in double-digits but from there, Loras rolled off eight straight points over the next two minutes to get within three. The Duhawks eventually retook the lead at 54-53 with just under 3:00 left in the third quarter.
Loras pushed its cushion to seven with two minutes gone by in the fourth at 65-58. Demers and Muhlbauer nailed consecutive three-pointers to cap a huge 10-2 run that covered nearly four minutes and gave the Beavers a 68-67 lead. The game was later tied at 70-70 with 3:00 to play and BVU would then turn the ball over on consecutive possessions as the Duhawks upped the lead to four with two minutes left and never let go of the advantage.
Addie Oberman led Loras with 18 points on 6-of-16 shooting. As a team, the Duhawks (10-6, 2-5 IIAC) shot 40 percent from the field.
Buena Vista has dropped two straight games and is now 8-7 overall (3-3 IIAC). The team looks to end the skid when it travels to second-ranked Wartburg College on Monday night (Jan. 15) for a 6:00 p.m. contest.
