Men's Basketball Drops Heartbreaking 71-70 Contest to Loras

Box Score

Buena Vista held a 51-41 lead with under 13:00 to play, but Loras College came all the way back and held off the Beavers inside of Siebens Fieldhouse on Saturday night, 71-70.

The Duhawks trailed 60-53 with 7:08 to play and still trailed by five with under 5:00 to go.  They then hit consecutive three's to help spark a 10-2 run which had them in front 69-66 with 1:27 remaining.

Sean Morgan took a nice feed from David Jeffries, and his layup made it 69-68 with just over a minute on the clock.  BVU came up with a big stop at the defensive end, but would turn it over on the ensuing possession and just 15 seconds left.

BVU was forced to foul, and the Duhawks made both to again make it a three-point advantage.  Paul Gallagher was then fouled as Loras was trying to stop a game-tying three-point shot, and he stepped up and sank both.

The Beavers again fouled with eight seconds left, and got help from the Duhawks who missed both attempts.  Gallagher grabbed the rebound, dribbled quickly across half court and called timeout.  Following a series of timeouts, BVU had 2.9 seconds remaining, and Thomas Wisecup inbounded the ball, got the ball right back and had an open look on the far side, but the shot came up just short off the front of the rim as time expired.

Loras finished the game shooting 10-of-25 from downtown, as BVU was held to just a 4-of-11 effort.  The Beavers, however, did go 22-of-27 at the free-throw line.

BVU, which dropped its first IIAC home game of the year, was 48 percent from the field and held a slight advantage on the glass, 26-24.

Buena Vista remains atop the IIAC standings by one game over the Duhawks and Nebraska Wesleyan.  The Beavers are now 14-8 overall (10-3 IIAC) and will return to action next Saturday when they close out their home schedule with a 4:00pm tip-off against Coe College.
