Box Score Buena Vista led by as many as 20 late in the second half and looked to be in control, but visiting Coe College closed the game on a 31-10 run and hit a game-winning three-point shot as time expired for an 86-85 victory inside of Siebens Fieldhouse on Saturday evening.
The Beavers went back up 75-55 on a Thomas Wisecup three-point shot with 7:20 left in regulation and appeared to be well in control. Coe did slowly chip away at that lead and was back within single digts before Sean Morgan put BVU back up 11 at 80-69 with under 3:00 left.
The Kohawks then made a trio of three-point shots and made it an 83-81 contest inside of a minute to play. Wisecup calmly sank a pair of free-throws to make it a four-point margin.
Coe came down and got a big offensive put back to make it a two-point contest, and then fouled David Jeffries with eight seconds remaining. Jeffries, however, misfired on the front end of the one-and-one attempt, Coe grabbed the rebound and came down and hit a step-back three at the top of the key as time exprired to complete the comeback and stun BVU.
Four starters scored in double figures for the Beavers which shot over 60 percent from the field in the contest. Wisecup helped lead the way with 18 points and four assists with Kennedy Drey adding 15 points and 10 rebounds. Drey became just the third player in program history to reach 800 career rebounds.
Jeffries chipped in with 14 points and four boards while Morgan added 13 points and five rebounds. Paul Gallagher finished with seven points, seven assists and five rebounds.
BVU was 60.4 percent from the field, including 5-of-10 from downtown. The Kohawks shot 43 percent from the field, but used a 14-of-36 performance from beyond the arc to fuel the comeback.
The Beavers never trailed in the game until the final shot went through and have now dropped consecutive home games after going 6-0 to begin IIAC play.
Hunter Pflughaupt scored a game-high 20 points (6-of-10 3's) to lead the Kohawks, who snapped their seven-game losing skid.
Buena Vista dips into a first-place tie with Loras College and is now 14-9 on the year (10-4 IIAC). BVU will look to get back on track and go after an IIAC title on the road beginning with a pivotal game at Central College (12-11, 6-8 IIAC) Wednesday night at 8:00pm.
