Box Score Jasmine Demers scored a game-high 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds, Claudia Larsen followed with 14 points and nine boards, but it was Saint Benedict using a big second quarter and then holding on late for a 73-63 win over Buena Vista at the Simpson College Thanksgiving Classic on Friday evening.
Demers and Larsen combined to go 11-of-23 from the field with Larsen also making a season-high six free-throws to help lead the Beavers. Morgan Muhlbauer chipped in 10 points and four rebounds before fouling out.
The Beavers were held to only 38.6 percent shooting from the field and just 4-of-17 from downtown and 15-of-24 at the free-throw line. The Blazers outrebounded BVU 51-38 in the contest.
Saint Benedict led 16-14 after the first quarter before outscoring the Beavers 24-11 in the second to take a 40-25 halftime lead. BVU tried to claw its way back into the contest in the second half cutting the deficit to nine early in the third quarter but were unable to close the gap any closer. the Blazers went back up by as many as 19 late in the frame and took a 61-44 lead into the fourth.
BVU went nearly the first two minutes of the fourth quarter before finally scoring when Larsen sank a pair of free-throws. The Blazers, however, maintained the 19-point margin throughout most of the period until the Beavers made a run in the final minutes to make it a 10-point final.
Nikki Fokken scored a team-high 13 points for CSB (4-0) while Chelsey Guetter recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Buena Vista dips to 2-3 overall and looks to bounce back on Saturday afternoon when it plays Iowa Wesleyan at 1:00 p.m.
