Men's Hoops has Six Game Win Streak Snapped at Dubuque

The University of Dubuque outscored the Buena Vista men's basketball team by 21 points from long range on Saturday afternoon which helped lead the Spartans to an 85-72 victory over the Beavers, snapping the team' six-game win streak.

The Spartans shot 14-of-27 from downtown (51.9 percent) while BVU made just 7-of-25 three-point attempts.  Two of those makes for the Beavers came on their first two baskets which gave them a 6-4 lead.  Dubuque, however, responded with a long range trey of its own to reclaim the lead lead for good.

Back-to-back three's by the Spartans midway through the first half gave them an 11-point cushion at 26-15 with just over nine minutes to go.  BVU got back within six before a 15-8 spurt by Dubuque gave the Spartans their largest lead of the half within less than a minute left on the clock.

The Spartans then hit six three-pointers during the first five minutes of the second half to open up a 19-point margin at 65-46. 

BVU, which has recently overcome a 14-point deficit to win, tried to mount another major comeback, as it went on an 11-2 run over the next four minutes to pull back within 67-57 with 11:26 left.  It got as close as six at the 4:02 mark, but the Beavers would go cold from the field down the stretch, as the Spartans closed the game on an 11-4 run.

Kennedy Drey led BVU with his 12th double-double of the year, scoring 18 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.  Thomas Wisecup scored 11 of his 16 points in the first half and went 4-of-9 overall from downtown.  Sean Morgan made 5-of-6 at the free-throw line and finished with 11 points.

The Beavers shot 46 percent from the field in the contest and made one more free-throw (11) than the Spartans attempted (10).

BVU, which entered as one of the top rebounding teams in the league was outrebounded by the Spartans, 43-29.  The 15 offensive boards by Dubuque (8-11, 5-6 IIAC) led to 19 second-chance points.

Buena Vista will look to rebound from its first loss in 2017 when it hosts Nebraska Wesleyan (13-5, 7-3 IIAC) on Monday night at 8:00pm.  The Prairie Wolves were the only team to beat BVU in conference play before today's loss to the Spartans.
