Box Score

The Buena Vista men's basketball team returns to action tonight on the road at Coe College (8-8, 4-3 IIAC) looking to remain atop the IIAC standings while extending its lead over the Kohawks and others in the standings.

Last Time Out:BVU kept its spot atop the standings after pulling out a hard fought, 50-47, road victory at Luther College this past Saturday afternoon.  The win was the third straight overall for the Beavers, who improve to 9-6 (5-1 IIAC).

The Kohawks, meanwhile, dropped an 88-75 road contest at Loras College on Monday night as the Duhawks scored 24 points off 24 Coe turnovers in the contest.  The loss snapped the Kohawks' three-game overall win streak, which included a 12-point home victory in their previous outing against then IIAC co-leader Nebraska Wesleyan, 85-73.

Inside the series: BVU swept the two games from the Kohawks last season, winning by a bucket in Storm Lake (65-63) before rolling to a 100-84 road win.  The Beavers have won eight of the last nine, with Coe's lone win coming in Cedar Rapids (69-67) in 2014-15.  Nine of the last 10 meetings have been decided by less than 10 points.

Scouting Coe: The Kohawks come in averaging just over 70.0ppg during IIAC play and are allowing a league-low 70.4ppg during that span.  The 88 points allowed to the Duhawks matched the team's second-highest point total allowed this season in any game.  The team is shooting 45 percent from the field, but only 32.6% from downtown.  The Kohawks trail only Buena Vista in field goal defense (43.3%) and are just ahead of the Beavers in three-point defense (30.7%).  Marshall Shedeck is the team's leading scorer at 13.4ppg with Matt Vonderhaar (12.7ppg) and Trevor Haaland (12.5ppg) right behind.  Shedeck (9.4rpg) and Vonderhaar (8.3rpg) are third and fifth, respectively, in the IIAC in rebounding.  The team is 4-2 on the year and coming off a 10-15 (5-9 IIAC) campaign a season ago.

Scouting BVU: For the second time in two seasons, the Beavers have just one loss through their first six IIAC games (started 8-1 in 2014-15).  It has picked up wins over Central, Wartburg and Luther since returing from the holiday break.  The team is among the top scoring teams during league play (82.5ppg) and is the only team shooting better than 50% from the field (50.6%).  Despite struggling a bit from long range during its non-conference schedule, BVU has come to life during IIAC games, shooting a league-best 41% from behind the arc.  Kennedy Drey has been on a tear as of late and is second in the league in scoring (20.2ppg) and in rebounding (11.0rpg).  He's one of only two players in the league averaging a double-double during league play.  David Jeffries is third in scoring (19.5ppg) and is second in field goal shooting (64.2%).  Thomas Wisecup is dishing out a team-high 3.7 assists per contest for a team that also leads the league in that category.
