Women's Hoops Holds off Luther; Moves into Second in IIAC Standings

Box Score

Seniors Lexi Fisher and Jasmyn Flynn-Graves each scored 17 points while Lacey Vokt added 11, and the Buena Vista women's basketball team held off a late surge by league-leading Luther College on Saturday afternoon to earn an 81-71 home victory over the Norse.

The Fisher and Flynn-Graves each made six field goals, including a combined five three-point buckets.  Fisher had three of those and became just the second player in school history to reach 200 in her career.  Vokt also added seven rebounds and dished out four assists.

Freshman Morgan Muhlbauer provided a big boost off the bench, scoring eight points and grabbing nine boards, as BVU held a strong 44-30 edge on the glass.

Buena Vista made 9-of-15 three-point shots in the first half and shot 60 percent from the field overall to take a 46-35 lead into the locker room.  The Beavers then held the Norse, one of the top shooting teams in the IIAC, without a point for over 5:00 to start the second half, and limited them to just eight points in the third quarter as the lead grewo to 60-43 headed to the fourth.

Luther, which averaged a league-best 9.4 three-point makes per contest, was held in check for a good deal of the contest, but slowly caught fire in the fourth quarter, as a 20-point BVU lead had been trimmed to eight with 1:16 left.

Free-throws became a big factor down the stretch and BVU was solid at the charity stripe in the final minute, connecting on 8-of-10 to maintain the double-digit lead.

The win by the Beavers (13-8, 7-3 IIAC), coupled by a loss by Loras, moved BVU into sole possession of second-place and just one game back of the Norse in the IIAC standings with four regular season games left to play.  The stretch run begins on Wednesday night on the road at Central College; a team BVU defeated by 54 points earlier this season.
