Box Score Just last Wednesday, Buena Vista had a rough shooting night and was dealt a 17-point loss at Simpson, but the Beavers put that game behind them and went into Indianola on Tuesday night and rolled past the Storm, 87-58, to advance to the Iowa Conference Tournament semifinals.
"The guys were really good tonight," said BVU head coach Brian Van Haaften. "We pass the ball nicely, and it was one of our better defensive efforts of the year."
Junior Kennedy Drey posted a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead five Beavers in double figures. Senior Nick Clark followed with 16 points, five assists and five steals, while Sean Morgan and Bobby Ivey each added 10 points. Robby Burke came off the bench and turned in another solid game with 11 points and six boards.
Buena Vista made 10-of-27 three-point attempts in the contest, including three from Thomas Wisecup, who went 3-of-5 and finished with nine points. The Beavers shot 44 percent overall from the field while also making 21-of-25 from the charity stripe.
After Simpson made a three-pointer to get within 18-15 midway through the opening half, the Beavers then went on a 14-0 run over the next four minutes which included three-point buckets from Wisecup and Ivey.
Connor Winkleman added to the three-point efficiency with one of his own that bumped the lead up to 20 at 37-17 with 3:36 left in the first half. Clark, who hit a three-pointer just before the first half buzzer at Coe on Saturday, drilled another on tonight against the Storm with under 10 seconds left in the half to give BVU a 46-29 halftime lead.
A 14-3 run at the start of the second half quickly pushed the margin to 28 just five minutes in, and the Beavers were never in any danger of losing that cushion the rest of the half. Ivey's layup with 8:27 left in the game gave the Beavers their largest lead of the night at 73-37.
BVU held the Storm to only 27 percent shooting from the field en route to its 28th win all-time in the Iowa Conference Tournament (28-9).
Sam Amsbaugh led Simpson with 12 points while Dillon Gretzky added 10.
"Coach Millea's game plan for tonight was put together brilliantly," Van Haaften added. "We're excited to keep playing."
The sixth-seed Beavers will now travel to second-seed Wartburg on Thursday night for a 7:00pm tip-off. It marks the 13th meeting between the two teams all-time in the conference tournament. Fifth-seed Central edged fourth-seed Loras, 84-79, in the other quarterfinal match-up.
