Beavers Clinch Final Spot into IIAC Tournament with Convincing Win over Kohawks

Box Score

The Buena Vista men's basketball team put its recent long range shoot struggles aside on Saturday afternoon as the Beavers made 16-of-29 from downtown en route to a 100-84 road win at Coe in the regular season finale.

BVU was facing a must-win situation, and needed Wartburg to defeat Luther, in order to land the sixth seed.  The Knights did their part for the Beavers by handing the Norse a 68-53 loss.

The Beavers had dropped six of seven games overall coming into Saturday's showdown with the Kohawks and had made more than eight three-point buckets only once during those contests, while being held to less than 35 percent six times.  That all went out the door in this contest as BVU set a season-high for three-point makes and made 50 percent of those attempts for just the second time all year.

Senior Nick Clark turned in five of those makes and finished with a game-high 33 points.  It was his fifth 30-point game of the year and his second during IIAC play.  He's now made 78 three-pointers this season which has him tied with Shane Steele for fourth in BVU single-season history and just four away from Eric Wiebers' all-time single-season record of 82 set in 2003-04.

Sophomore Thomas Wisecup also made a career-high five shots from beyond the arc and turned in a career-high 20 points.  Senior Bobby Ivey scored in double-digits for the first time since January 23 and tallied a career-best 19, including a perfect 6-for-6 at the free-throw line.  He also grabbed six rebounds.

Junior Kennedy Drey posted his fourth double-double in the last six games, scoring 11 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

As a team, the Beavers made 35-of-60 field goal attempts overall (58 percent).

Coe managed to shoot 46 percent overall and finished with 12 made three-pointers of their own.

The game was tied 38-38 with just under 2:00 to play in the first half before Wisecup, Drey and Clark hit on consecutive three-point shots to give the Beavers a 47-38 lead at the half.

That momentum carried over into the second half as Ivey scored the team's first seven points, including a three that gave BVU a 54-41 lead.  Fellow senior Jarod Juhl made sure his career would live on for at least one more game with a long-range shot that pushed the margin to 17 with 13:00 to go.

Coe slowly chipped away at the lead by making five three-point buckets of its own during a 22-12 run that cut the BVU lead down to 77-70 with 6:30 still to play.  Ivey responded with a pair of free-throws while Clark added a layup to make it an 81-70 advantage.

The Kohawks went nearly two minutes without a field goal but kept within striking distance until Clark hit his final trey with just over 3:00 remaining to make it a 14-point lead and Coe was unable to get any closer than 12 from there.

Matt Vonderhaar posted 28 points, including a game-high six three-pointers, to lead Coe which saw its season end at 11-4 (4-10 IIAC).

Buena Vista improves to 10-15 overall and wraps up the conference schedule at 5-9.  The Beavers will now travel and play at third-seed Simpson College on Tuesday, February 23, at 7:00pm.  The two teams will meet for the second time in less than a week, and split the regular season series.
