Box Score Buena Vista rallied from an 11-point deficit to get as close as two late in regulation, but a last-second three-point shot was knocked away as time expired, and visiting Loras College hung on for a 71-68 victory on Saturday afternoon inside of Siebens Fieldhouse.
Jasmyn Flynn-Graves scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed six rebounds to help pace BVU on the offensive end. Becca Pennington added 17 points, five rebounds and four assists. Lacey Vokt was next with six points and a game-high seven assists.
Buena Vista was limted to only 8-of-24 shooting from downtown with four of those makes coming from Pennington.
Loras connected on 47 percent of its shot attempts overall and held a 10-2 advantage in second chance points.
The Duhawks overcame four first-quarter three-point buckets by BVU and took a slim 22-21 lead to the second. After shooting 50 percent in the opening frame, the Beavers cooled off in the second and made just 31 percent from the field and trailed 40-34 at the break.
It was nearly the opposite in the third quarter with the Beavers making 6-of-10 shots while holding Loras to only 31 percent. Flynn-Graves scored seven of the team's 17 points in the frame to pull BVU within 55-51.
Morgan Muhlbauer drilled a three to start the final 10 minutes to make it a one-point game, but then BVU went six minutes without a field goal, as the Duhawks went on a 14-6 run to take a 69-60 lead with 3:21 to play. Lexi Fisher's layup with 15 seconds left made it a two-point game, and after Loras made just 1-of-2 at the free-throw line, BVU had one last chance to tie.
After a pair of timeouts, Pennington had her three-point attempt knocked away as she went up, and time expired.
Loras, which defeated BVU, 73-71, on a shot just before the buzzer earlier this season, is now tied with the Beavers for second in the Iowa Conference standings at 8-4.
The loss snapped the Beavers' four-game overall win streak and was just the second home loss in conference play. The team looks to bounce back as it begins the final week of the regular season with a road game at Simpson College (14-9, 7-5 IIAC) on Wednesday night at 6:00pm.
