Box Score David Jeffries scored 18 points to lead three players in double figures for Buena Vista on Sunday afternoon, as the Beavers held off a scrappy Beloit College team , 68-66, for its second win in as many days.
Jeffries scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half and finished the game shooting 8-of-13 from the field and adding four rebounds and three steals. Junior Thomas Wisecup hit four three's in the first half and scored all 14 of his points in the first 20 minutes. Senior Paul Gallagher made a pair of three's and was 4-of-5 from the field overall while dishing out five assists.
Kennedy Drey moves within 12 points of 1,000 after being held to only six. He did grab a team-high five rebounds.
The Beavers made sven of their first eight three-point attempts but then connected on just two of their final 16. Overall, they shot 43 percent from the field and attempted just two free-throws.
It was a tight game throughout with 11 lead changes and four ties. The game was tied at 35-35 in the closing seconds of the first half before Trey Robinson's layup with 55 ticks left gave the team a two-point halftime advantage.
Neither team scored for nearly the first three minutes of the second half before back-to-back three-point shot by the Bucs gave them a 41-37 lead. It was back-and-forth for most of the second half until a Connor Winkelman jumper gave the Beavers their largest lead of the game, a 63-55 margin with 5:55 to go.
The Bucs rolled off eight straight to tie things at 63-63 with 4:32 left. Jeffries put BVU back in front moments later before Gallagher hit a big three-point bucket to increase the margin to five with 55 seconds left.
Beloit made it a two-point game with 35 seconds left, and after a missed shot and then a foul by BVU, the Bucs made the first of their two free-throw attempts but then missed the second and were unable to snag the rebound.
Buena Vista improves to 6-3 on the year and will return to action on Tuesday, December 20, for a non-conference game at Greenville, starting at 4:00pm.
