Box Score Senior Kennedy Drey registered his 21st career double-double with 22 points and 14 rebounds to help lead the Buena Vista men's basketball team to an 80-61 victory over visiting Gustavus Adolphus in both team's season openers.
Drey made 8-of-17 from the field and also matched career-highs in both free-throw makes (6) and attampts (9). Junior Thomas Wisecup was good on 3-of-4 from downtown and poured in 19 points and three assists.
Junior David Jeffries turned in 11 points in what was his BVU debut while senior Paul Gallagher set a career-high with 10 assists. Fellow senior Sean Morgan had a big night on the defensive end, hauling in nine rebounds while posting a carer-high six blocks.
BVU shot a sizzling 56 percent from the field and held a 45-35 edge on the glass. The team did turn it over 21 times which led to 24 Gusties points.
The Beavers broke open the game at 39-17 with under 8:00 to play in the first half and went on to lead 44-34 at the half.
Gustavus did slowly chip away at the start of the second half, narrowing the gap to 55-50 with 11:34 left before seven straight by the Beavers pushed it back to 12. The Gusties got as close as 68-60 with 5:00 to go, but seven straight points from Wisecup quickly made it a 15-point lead, and it was all BVU from there.
Alec Koster led Gustavus with 13 points and six rebounds.
The win snapped BVU's six-game losing streak in season openers. It was also the team's first season-opening win inside of Siebens Fieldhouse since 2004-05.
Buena Vista (1-0) will look to make it consecutive wins when it hosts Augsburg College on Saturday night at 7:00pm. The Auggies were dealt a 95-71 road loss at Simpson College on Friday.
