Box Score The Buena Vista women's basketball team took the court for the first time in 2016 on Saturday afternoon at the St. Benedict Classic, but a cold shooting game doomed the Beavers during a tough 78-52 loss to Concordia College-Moorhead.
BVU struggled to get many shots to fall as the team was held to only 19 percent from the field, including 5-of-36 from downtown.
Freshman Morgan Muhlbauer turned in a career-high 12 points for her first collegiate double-digit scoring effort. She connected on 6-of-15 shots overall off the bench to go along with four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Senior Jasmyn Flynn-Graves was the only other Beaver in double-digits with 11, while also grabbing four rebounds.
Junior Nicole Snyder made a pair of three-point buckets for a season-high eight points, as senior Becca Pennington followed with seven points and a team-leading seven rebounds.
The Cobbers were in control from the opening tip by building a 14-2 lead midway through the first quarter. BVU held to only two field goals in the frame, as they trailed 20-5.
Concordia, which made 8-of-13 shots in the opening quarter, extended the lead to 27-5 two minutes into the second quarter before the margin reached 30 at 41-11 with 1:30 left in the half. BVU scored six of the final eight points of the half to make it a 43-17 game at the break.
The Cobbers (7-4) maintained the lead throughout the third quarter while the Beavers outscored them by six over the final 10 minutes, but it was not near enough.
All five starters scored in double figures for the Cobbers, who shot better than 51 percent from the field and outrebounded BVU, 53-40.
Jenna Januschka led the way for Concordia with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Hannah Jeske turned in 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Buena Vista dips to 5-5 on the year and will close out the non-conference portion of its schedule on Sunday afternoon by facing the host school in a 3:00pm tip-off.
