Women's Basketball Cruises to 83-66 Road win against Spartans

Box Score

Becca Pennington matched her career-high with 20 points and grabbed six rebounds, Jordan Tynes nearly added a triple-double with 11 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocks, to help pace the Buena Vista women's basketball team during an 83-66 Iowa Conference road victory at the University of Dubuque on Wednesday night.

The Beavers took advantage of the free-throw line and second chance points in the contest, scoring 21 at the free-throw line and getting 30 second chance points.  They dominated the Spartans on the glass, 52-29, including a 29-12 margin on the offensive end.

Pennington was 6-of-16 from the floor and 7-of-10 at the charity stripe with Tynes making four of her six field goal attempts.  Senior Jasmyn Flynn-Graves, who came in leading the IIAC in scoring during conference games, was held to only 3-of-13 shooting, but made all six of her free-throw attempts to finish with 13 points and eight rebounds.

Lexi Fisher made a pair of long range buckets to add eight points, to go along with eight boards.  Lacey Vokt chipped in nine points and three assists.  Junior Nicole Snyder came off the bench and made three treys to finish with nine points.  As a team, BVU made 10 three-point baskets in the game, giving the Beavers eight such games on the year. That is the highest single-season total with at least 10 made treys since the 2005-06 campaign (12).

The Spartans led 17-14 after the first quarter before BVU used a key 18-1 run to explode for 30 second quarter points and a 43-31 lead at the break.  The lead grew to as much as 23 (60-37) in the closing minutes of the third quarter before the Spartans finished on an 11-0 run to get it back to 12 after three.

Morgan Muhlbauer made 1-of-2 at the line with 6:24 left in regulation to cap a 9-2 run to start the final frame and push the margin back to 19.  Dubuque got as close as 12 with 3:00 to go, but free-throws down the stretch helped the Beavers add to the lead late.

Buena Vista has now won back-to-back games and improves to 9-7 overall (3-2 IIAC).  It looks to make it three straight when it hosts Central College (4-12, 1-4 IIAC) on Saturday, January 23, at 2:00pm.
