Box Score

In what was only the second-ever meeting between the two teams, and the first since 1976, St. John's used a quick start on Saturday to hand Buena Vista a 56-7 loss in a game played at Collegeville, Minn.

BVU went three-and-out on the game's opening drive, and a bad snap on the punt attempt was picked up and ran back 24-yards for a score by the Johnnies just over two minutes into the game.

St. John's then went on to score touchdowns on their first three offensive possessions after that, to build a 28-0 lead, and got a 22-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-one late in the first half to build a 35-0 lead.

Buena Vista had its best chance at scoring at the end of the half, when they had the ball all the way down to the Johnnies' one-yard line, but had multiple pass attempts fall incomplete.

St. John's got the ball to start the second half and went 67 yards in just under two minutes to increase its lead to 42-0.

BVU's deficit grew to 49-0 on the first play of the fourth quarter before it got on the scoreboard on the ensuing drive after marching 62 yards in only nine plays, getting a 27-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Trevor Trunck to senior wideout Jalen Henningsen.  Henningsen, who had seven catches for over 100 yards last week, hauled in seven more on Saturday for 101 yards.

The Johnnies, who outgained the Beavers, 266-16 on the ground, added the game's final score on their next drive, getting a 44-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter.

St. John's finshed with 466 yards of total offense, while holding BVU to only 250.  Trunck, who took over for starter Tory Beger late in the first half, completed 10-of-26 passes for 165 yards and one touchdown.

Cody Mowery chipped in with 67 rushing yards on 18 carries.  The Beavers were sacked five times for a combined loss of 41 yards.  Ben Seitz caught a season-high six passes for 76 yards, including a long of 20.

Sam Sura, the reigning All-American running back and Gagliardi semifinalist from a year ago, carried the ball 18 times for a game-high 132 yards and one score.

Brady Illg was the team's leading tackler for the second straight week, finishing with eight total.  Beau Van Wechel followed with seven, including one sack.  Justin Kahl intercepted his first pass of the year and added a pair of tackles.

Buena Vista will have its bye week next Saturday before playing its home opener on Saturday, September 26 against Waldorf College.  Kick-off inside of J. Leslie Rollins Stadium is scheduled for 7:00pm.  The game will be the first-ever night game played inside of the stadium.
